Downspout Repair

Downspouts are the part of the drainage system most homeowners overlook until there's water in the basement. In Minnesota, the combination of heavy spring snowmelt and summer thunderstorms puts real volume through your gutters, and a downspout that's leaking at a joint, separating from the fascia, or terminating too close to the foundation can send that water exactly where you don't want it — against the basement wall.

The most common downspout failures I see in Hastings and Dakota County are joint separations caused by ice expansion in winter, sealant failures at elbow connections, and extensions that are either missing entirely or too short to move water away from the foundation. Correcting these is usually a straightforward job — reseal the joints, replace a damaged section, add a longer extension — but the impact on foundation protection is significant when it's done right.

For homes with basement moisture issues, downspout condition should be one of the first things assessed before investing in interior waterproofing systems. In many cases, simply extending downspouts and correcting drainage grade near the foundation resolves moisture entry without any interior work. I always look at the full downspout run and grade condition when I'm on site so you get an accurate picture of what the drainage situation actually is.
