A horse property in Hastings had a 275-foot fence that needed to be rebuilt from scratch. The owners wanted the top rail running perfectly level horizon to horizon, regardless of grade, so the space would be safe and usable for their horses.

Pulled all the old boards first and cleared the run clean. The tricky part: the ground drops 2 feet 10 inches over the full 275-foot length, which meant I couldn’t use grade as a reference for anything. Instead, I set level lines end to end and put the top rail in first, running it flat horizon to horizon regardless of what the ground was doing underneath. Once the top row was set, I built a custom jig that used it as the reference point for the middle and bottom rails. Every subsequent rail was spaced off the one above it, not the ground, so the spacing stayed consistent and tight from the first post to the last.

All 275 feet done in two visits. The fence line runs straight and level, rails evenly spaced top to bottom, and every post is solid. Before leaving, I walked the full run and checked each section. The owners now have a fence that’s both functional for their horses and something they’re proud to look at from the house.
